minka

Minka

Documentary Short - USA - 00:15:07
Produced by Andrew Blum, Davina Pardo
Directed by Davina Pardo

MINKA is a film about place and memory, a farmhouse in Japan and the bond between two men. Its story begins in 1967, when Associated Press foreign correspondent John Roderick became the unlikely owner of an enormous rundown farmhouse, a building type known as a “minka.” Working with his friend and housemate, a young university student named Yoshihiro Takishita, Roderick transported the massive timber house from the Japanese Alps to the Tokyo suburb of Kamakura. It defined both their lives: for Roderick, it was the backdrop for a remarkable career as the leading “China watcher” of the Mao era. For Takishita, it inspired a life spent collecting and rebuilding similar houses, work that continues today. MINKA is more meditation than history. Filmed just following Roderick's death at ninety-three, it uses this one house as a vessel of memory to explore the power of place and the meanings of home.

Documentary Short - USA - 00:08:10
Produced by Kim Sheridan
Written by Kim Sheridan
Directed by Kim Sheridan

A small film crew looks up at the sky and contemplates what's really going on with our environment. This film was created as part of the 2010 International Documentary Challenge, in which a short non-fiction film had to be written, filmed, and produced within a five-day period. First-time documentary filmmaker Kim Sheridan accepted this challenge, but took it one step further. She chose to do it all with a crew of only two: herself and her husband. Kim wrote, directed, produced, co-edited, co-filmed, narrated, and even created the musical score for 'What's Up?' It is her intention that the film will encourage viewers to open their eyes and their minds, and to take action to make a positive difference in the world around us.
